Malu Fernandez On Everyone's Mind

More and more reactions have been pouring in on the Malu Fernandez Issue, and yet we still have to come across a genuine reactionary statement coming from the people of Manila Standard or from People Asia Magazine.

I was reading through some of the blogs that have written posts on this issue and have come across my former Manila Times Editor Francis Lagniton, who is now with the Manila Standard. (If memory serves me right, he is also an elected officer of the National Press Club)

Initially, Lagniton had made claim that the Manila Standard Today had no columnist named Malu Fernandez only to revert in another posted comment that indeed there was a Malu Fernandez and that she only contributed to a weekly column. You will find his posted comments here.

Mr. Lagniton, I hope you got the message, having read one blog among the many who are crying foul. This lady has hurt a sector of our society and she is affiliated with your paper. Saying that she only contributes to a weekly column doesn't exactly clear Manila Standard from this issue.

Besides, lest you failed to read the fine print, we're calling for a boycott on your paper. We may not number highly but the mere fact that a certain sector of Philippine society is calling for boycotting your product is enough reason for me to react and release a proper statement.

A surprising call for reconsideration was made by blogger Manuel Quezon III, who said that a boycott on the newspaper would be too harsh. Pointing something about the suppresion of Ms. Fernandez right to free speech and would be a precedent to future similar instances.

Which is why in my post yesterday I called for Ms. Fernandez to look into herself and find a little delicadeza and resign. God, we are really making this pompous arse famous.

I do agree with MLQ3's stand, surely firing her would be a violation of her right to free speech, but what about those who have been hurt by her acerbic wit? Collateral Damage.

I am through with lashing out at Fernandez, i think the two earlier posts covered that for me. right now, i am reiterating the call; MALU, DO WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU, RESIGN.

Blogger Batjay, who has captured the hearts of readers through his blogging from an OFW point of view, has actually taken a reverse in approach of this issue. In his latest post, Batjay recalls afternoons at a plaza which OFW's frequent in Singapore during the weekends and goes to say that one of the things he relishes on a plane ride going home is to hear chatter between fellow OFW's. Nope, he never did say anything about how they smelled.

I guess we will never hear the end of this issue till we see Fernandez' weary pig face, minus the 17 kilos of make up, dirt poor and embarrassed over what she did.

I am allowed to dream.

just a correction. boycott is fine, it's the consumer's right. i'm against calls for her being fired, which is something i also opposed in the case of justice cruz. demands for an apology, for a change in editorial policies, etc. is something i support as well. it's the reader's right.

thanks for dropping by sir. I will take note of your correction and like i have posted, i am not for her being fired away as well. I think she should, as proper as it may seem, resign out of delicadeza.

Demand for an apology? She did issue one and look at what it all id, it just added more flames to the brewing issue.

However, i think it is Manila Standard Today or People Asia's rightful duty to their readers to come out with a statement on this issue.

She is nothing but a pampered, pig-faced prick. That's all.

reading that article made me sick... how could she be so heartless and thick... what a sad, sad woman...

If she writes well enough to be an enjoyable read, maybe she would be worth raising a fuss over. But she doesn't (write well, that is). The only thing to do is to ignore her and hope that maybe she'll go away. The real trouble is with her publishers - can't they come up with anything more interesting to print?

Anton, thank you for writing about this, I had not known that Francis had commented on one of the blogs.

Although, I'm not sure we can verify his statements until it shows up on their site or paper itself. If you could contact him and verify, this would be appreciated.

But if even he didn't know who Malu was initially, then sadly, I can see why they would be slow to react. Maybe the lifestyle section of the paper is keeping mum on the issue. As for People Asia, their silence is still deafening.

Yvonne, ignoring a problem is seldom an effective way to deal with them. In the future, the problem may be worse or even escalate out of control. But indeed, you are right, I am still scratching my head, trying to come up with the answer as to why they would even pass this article through editing and into print.

I think Manila Standard just printed another one of her articles yesterday.

I heard a tv program wants to have Ms Fernandez as a guest with Pinoy bloggers who have written about her.

Tinig.com just posted the statement of the Filipino Press Club-Dubai on this issue.

i think we all have to close this issue and move on with our daily lives.

we have made out point and apology was made - whether sincere or otherwise, and that is all that is important.

now, i'm sure anybody would have to think twice before making any harsh statements about OFW's, right???

more power to OFW's!!!

MALU FERNANDEZ,HUWAG KANG FEELING !

MALU DIDN'T WROTE THAT APOLOGY. PEOPLE SHOULDN'T ACCEPT IT UNLESS SHE PUBLISH IT IN PEOPLE ASIA TOO.

For me, resignation and public apology is not enough. For what she did, she should be declared as a persona non grata

If our government can declare Hollywood actress Kate Winslet a persona non grata for berating Manila as ugly and dirty, surely they can also do that to Malu Fernandez who insulted her fellow Filipinos

There really isn't any need to insult Ms. Fernandez further; I think she's quite miserable on her own. I've encountered her enough to know that she's pretentious and obnoxious. I also know that although her family may have some affluence, I certainly would never include her among the truly high-end of Philippine society she aspires to associate herself with. Sure she may orbit the circle, but she lacks the financial gravitas to truly live the lifestyle at that level. But even that aside, her complete lack of finer sensibilities or circumspect in her utterances indicate a mistaken concept of how the higher strata generally operate. The upper-crust manner, in my humble opinion, is one where there is the absence of a need to prove it to anyone. The traditionally rich guard the private details of their lives, perhaps just sharing it with a few intimates. Bragging about the inconsequential accoutrements of “the fabulous life” as Ms. Fernandez does in article after article, smacks more of an arriviste rather than a person already “to the manor born.” The classic signs are all there - name-dropping, an obsession with expensive accessories (and the need to highlight the brand), the feeling of entitlement, the clear disdain and lack of empathy for those she feels are not of her strata. It must be very difficult for her to constantly try to keep up with a crowd she just can’t keep up with financially. If she could she would have easily bought a first-class ticket and we would have all been spared of her tirade.

Feeling alienated from a crowd she so desperately wants to be a part of must make her very frustrated. Many bloggers also made fun of her portliness. I would imagine that the insults concerning her weight we’re not the first time she had heard such comments. She was physically large when I met her, and she still is to this day. There must also be a great deal of frustration in not being able to lose the weight. Part of being “Fierce and Fabulous” is the glam-factor. Obesity isn’t generally considered glamorous. There is so much out of her control that I can only imagine her seething anger as she sat in economy with her fellow Filipinos from Dubai. Powerless to do anything to extricate her from that circumstance, she lashed out by berating them, by trying to convince people that although she sat in economy with them, she is not one of them. She is high class and they are not. That kind of venom, that kind of irrational anger is so deep-seated that it can only come from a life she felt she had no control of – much like her weight and her social status.

I am an OFW working in an automotive company in Qatar. When travelling, I usually take the economy class in a Qatar Airways plane to save money. Why spend big in high-end cabins when I can also be comfortable in the economy class?I am just practical.Afterall, it is just a matter of eight to nine hours.Malu Fernandez,I guess it's common sense and a good heart, which we OFWs have in common that set us apart from people like you...So please dont say that we lack common sense because in the first place, we cannot land a job abroad without common sense...Choosing to leave the Philippines for a greener pasture doesnt mean we are desperate and jobless in our home country. Instead,it is bravery, patriotism and love of family...Lastly, never ridicule an OFW,never ridicule our unsung HEROES.

this is the first time i have ever posted a comment, and thanks to malu fernandez i am doing it now. i too left the philippines and two very under-aged children to try my luck in the u.s. although i dont work in dubai, i consider myself an OFW or DH or whatever this malu call us and PROUD to be one. did she conveniently forget that the dollars sent by OFWs around the world helps fuel the philippine economy. how dare she belittle us who sacrifice to be away from our loved ones just to put food on their table, roof over their head and send them to good schools. those dollars came from every BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS from "axe & charlie" perfumed OFWs.

yan ang prize ng trabaho nyo. deal with it. believe me there are a lot of malu fernandez, di lang nga sila journalist kaya di nyo nababasa yung thoughts nila.
at syempre yung mga politicians kakampi sa mga "inapi" ni malu taba. hehe. personally i don't like her wrting style pero not her subject matter. yun lang. writing style lang sumabit si taba.
peace.

3. May dati syang boyfriend na OFW na iniwan sya at ipinagpalit sa iba dahil sa walang maganda sa kanya...physical features man o pag iisip.

O kayaý it's a case of, truth hurts.

incredible that mlq3 (and some others) does not know the meaning of 'responsible journalism' and 'free speech'. for their education:

1) my plane seatmate smells so greasy you could fry pork chops with it

2) my FAT FILIPINA plane seatmate smells so greasy you could fry pork chops with it

hope you can see the difference.

one other thing, the apology thing - is not official until it appears on her column, where it should be. not on geocities
