There is word going around that Malu Fernandez has finally given in and has resigned from both the Manila Standard Today and People's Asia. (two separate entities).
I got the details from this site . But it still has to be verified.
If anyone can shed light on this, then please send it in.
Right now, I am smiling.
UPDATE!!
A fellow blogger passed on this link which has Malu's statement and apologies, to her credit, I am glad she did not push further her so called acerbic wit.
Her statement reads;
Statement from Malu Fernandez on the OFW Controversy
"I am humbled by the vehement and heated response provoked by my article entitled 'From Boracay to Greece!' which came out in the June 2007 issue of People Asia. To say that this article was not meant to malign, hurt or express prejudice against the OFWs now sounds hollow after reading through all the blogs from Filipinos all over the world. I am deeply apologetic for my insensitivity and the offensive manner in which this article was written, I hear you all and I am properly rebuked. It was truly not my intention to malign hurt or express prejudice against OFWs.
As the recent recipient and target of death threats, hate blogs, and deeply personal insults, I now truly understand the insidiousness of discrimination and prejudice disguised as humor. Our society is bound together by human chains of kindness and decency. I have failed to observe this and I am now reaping the consequences of my actions. It is my fervent hope that the lessons that Ive learned are not lost on all those who through anonymous blogs, engaged in bigotry, discrimination, and hatred ( against overweight individuals , for example )
I take full responsibility for my actions and my friends and family have nothing to do with this. To date I have submitted my resignation letters to both the Manila Standard and People Asia, on that note may this matter be laid to rest. "
I think we should now put this issue to rest. So many words have already been said and I guess, she has gotten the picture. I pray though, that the world not be cruel enough to have another Malu Fernandez say or write something that would hurt a sector of society.
What has to be focussed on right now is the plight of our overseas filipino workers. They are our unsung heroes, yet they go through some of the worst ordeals just to make sure that at the end of the month they will be able to sened money home to their families.
Let us learn to forgive, but yes, let us not forget.

sana, totoo na ito. anyone can create a geocities account, you know.
it's confirmed, i just saw it on tv patrol. congratulations to all the OFWs in the world for this triumphant campaign against malu fernandez. who would have known that her journey to greece this summer will result to her demise as a columnist? truly, it's a trip that she will never forget.
No matter what she does, she really did hurt a lot. It's bad to even think of this but she deserves everything she's facing now.
Punyetera, insensitive sya!
Annalyn
"malu" spelled backwards reads "ulam". hehe..
People power!
Actually.. more like "blogging power!"
mr de leon,
i respect your call to forgive but not forget but i hope you will also respect mine that i do not agree with this...
you see, as a people, we have always forgiven only tp be hurt over and over again. i mean, look at the marcoses and all their minions, are they still not hurting the people until now with their arrogance and gloat?
i am a simple man with simple needs working outside of our country to provide for my family, but having lived outside the "filipino psyche", i have learned that you don't just forgive. you must get justice. there is 1 purpose for this, so that this is not repeated. i agree that there are sins that can easily forgiven but this is reserved for loved ones and really the minor ones.
as a people, the filipinos must learned to give, get & practice justice. this is the only way we can get respect from ourselves and from the rest of the world.
all i want for the philippines now is not riches or grandiose, but a simple respect. we cannot do much about the riches yet but we can do something about respect...
let's go get ourselves justice, so we can go get ourselves respect...

This blog seems to doubt the authenticity of Malu Fernandez's alleged apology:

It would be nice if the statement really did come from her though, and if it were sincere. One can hope that vox populi still wields some clout and can effect change in the world.
haayy..
buti naman tapos na 'tong issue na 'to. sana nga siya talaga nagsulat nung statement (actually meron din nito sa philstar ngayon, page 14, so posibleng legit siya) para tapos na yung isyu. tapos din writing career niya. yan kasi.
ahm relieved.. is like flushing a big pile of doodoo in da bowl, no?
hello sir, this is yoshi again.
another link, but this time this is from ABS-CBN Interactive:

Thanks.
it's a good thing that she resigned b
Well take a look at her friendster profile...
"Super bitch but with a heart of gold .... hahaha sometimes i'm not what I seem to be oooh thats a double edged sword..."

I don't think we should just let this issue to rest right away. Let's not let her get away with it so easily.
How can the Filipinos expect other nationalities to respect them when their own kababayan shows utter disrespect and arrogance towards their own people? She's a wannabe writer (actually waclass) who's so insensitive. That acerbic wit is really tactless wit. She can't even distinguish the meaning of the word then and than. LOL! And you say you're a journalist? And u have the gall to insinuate that maybe the people who were offended don't read anything thicker "then" (as u said) a magazine, hence they didn't get your humour. I bet you the target readers you are referring to are like u-bullies. Bottom line Malu, u r full of crap. Who are u to judge these people? Why don't u instead write about the corrupt politicians who drain the country's coffers. So that these OFWs that you maligned would not have to leave the country to support PI. Redeem yourself by hunting those corrupt and greedy politicos back home.
Expose their evil ways. At least then you will be contributing to a worthy cause instead of being a shallow wannabe writer.
public statement of apology by malu (wang)?..doubtful..
kung talagang matapang siya harapin niya ang media na pinagtataguan niya..very insincere at all...
now that wala na siyang trabaho, baka mag-OFW na rin siya. hehehe!
sya sya patawarin na nga. i m sure nangayayat sya ng husto sa mga nabasa nya. honestly, people are entitled to their own opinions but sometimes opinions are definately better kept than said.
haha i'll be like her. will you hate me.. weeee!!
I was really astonished reading her article. I thought ethnocentrism is used only by aliens (foreigners) when I found out that she is a true blue Filipina I was really devastated. by the stereotyping comments she had used. I even seriously want to SLASH MY WRIST…a metaphor phrase but a Figurative indeed…. I was an OFW in Dubai and I humbly say i excel in my job and I am paid fairly well. I live in a descent villa in Jumeirah and drive a sophisticated car as my freinds used to say and I had travelled 54 countries for my leisure sake.such a comfortable life…isnt it? and im not bragging, whinning or bitching because this is my real life situation as an OFW in Dubai… Being an OFW is not only about working as a DH. A lot of OFW excel in Dubai and to mention a few they work as Engineers, Doctors, Bankers, Managers, Training Consultants and Marketing Specialist. The problem with Malou she pretends to be well educated eventhough her Cerebrum is too narrow to grasp new ideas for higher mental process and her frontal lobe is highly damage for she does’nt how to show emotions. Now that I’m already here in the states I had never forgetten that once in my life I was an OFW and im very proud to be an OFW.I love my kababayans and I miss them very much wether they are proletariat or bourgeoisie, wearing axe cologne or bouchelone it doesnt matter to me, we are all homo sapien created by God in his own image and likeness though not socioeconomically equal but we are one in the eyes of God … well, i just want to relay a mesage to Malou that she should be more responsible in her words coz WORDS are very powerful that it can make you or break you….Its not a crime to share your opinion but you have to be more prime coz you are liable with your own WORDS used as a journalist.I am really torn out by your article but I had forgiven you coz all of us are humans and we all learn from our mistakes…. : )))))
Boycott People Asia Magazine as they are responsible for publishing Malu's column.
alam nyo ba na si malu fernandez nagtatrabaho sa shopwise? at hindi naman sya nagsulat nung apology letter na yun kundi ang mga friends nya? galit na galit pa nga sya nung sinabihan siyang magsulat ng apology letter?
i think it is already enough. she apologized and made an appropriate action for what she did. :)
